oelarge-snowyIt has been a busy year for the Open Education Working Group and we wanted to share this year’s highlights!

Meeting up – In July we had actually had a physical meet up at OKFestival! It was a smörgåsbord of fun and we pulled together lost of the most exciting, innovative areas of open education at the time.

Sharing knowledge – Community sessions: We’ve been involved in 2 online events. What has open data got to do with education and Presenting the Open Education Handbook. Check them out!

Talking – We’ve now had 5 Working Group calls and plan to have another in January – join us – it’s a great way to make open education friends!

Blogging – Can you believe we’ve published 16 Open Education Around the World posts!! There are still countries missing though and we’d love to hear from you!

Following – We’ve now got 350 of members of our mailing list and have passed 1,000 Twitter followers which is great news!

Learning – In March we announced our Advisory board. What a great bunch of people and how lucky we are!

Sharing – We have been sharing our projects and initiatives. People are really starting to chat to each other and even put together ideas for proposals. Here are some of the initiatives we are keen to support and the projects we’ve heard from. There is always room for more.

Writing – One of the big successes of the year is the Open Education Handbook. We’ve now added a splash page so you can find all the versions, editions and formats. We wrote this book together through a series of handbooks and online events. Great work!

So we really should all give ourselves a big festive pat on the back.

Taking things forward – However there is still more to be done. It would be great to see the community taking more of an active role in supporting and managing the group – please do let us know if you’d like more responsibility – we’d love to share the co-ordination role with others. We’d also like to encourage more sharing and discussion from across the globe and from many different sectors.

This is your group – let 2015 be the year when we get to hear your voice!

Seasons Greetings to all our members and future members!

Welcome to the Open Education Working Group

oelargeDiscussions around open education tend to focus primarily on Open Educational Resources (OER) – freely accessible, openly licensed resources that are used for teaching, learning, educational, assessment and research purposes. However open education is a complex beast made up of many aspects, and the important elements of opening up relevant educational data and changing both institutional and wider culture are often neglected.

We are keen to see the discussions around open data in education pulled into the wider debates around open education, so have established new Open Education Working Group. The group is still at an early stage of development but we’re keen to get the open education community involved from the start to help shape the objectives and initial activities. Why don’t you sign up to the mailing list and help us begin to think about what this Open Education Working Group needs to do.

LinkedUpThe Open Education Working Group has been established as one of the activities of the LinkedUp Project. It will be officially launched at a panel session entitled: The facets of open education: resources, data and culture and will take place on Tuesday 17 September, at OKCon in Geneva.
